Makha Bucha Day, also known as Maka Puja, celebrates Buddha’s preaching and includes a beautiful candle ceremony called “Wian Tian”, which literally means circle and candle. People congregate around the main temple in the town and start walking around it with lit candles. It is an important public holiday in Thailand commemorating the event where 1,250 of the Lord Buddha’s disciples spontaneously gathered to hear him preach. This marks a milestone for the growth of Buddhism in Thailand.

Buddhism & Thai massage

For centuries Thai massage was taught and practised in temples as part of traditional Thai medicine.

Thai Massage in Thailand is usually taught in a Buddhist context and the Buddhist concept of Metta is an important part of the Thai Massage practice. Metta is usually translated as Loving Kindness. It is the state of mind of the therapist that encompasses humility and gratitude, a positive intention, loving awareness, and compassion towards the client.

Thai massage uses gentle pressure and stretching techniques to relax the whole body. This is an ancient healing practice dating back to around 2,500–7,000 years ago.
